Mark of the Dunce

Stickin' to his guns:

A Georgia factory worker claims in a federal lawsuit that he was fired after he refused to wear a 666 sticker he feared would doom him to eternal damnation.

Billy E. Hyatt claims he was fired from Pliant Corp., a plastics factory in northern Georgia near Dalton, after he refused to wear a sticker proclaiming that his factory had been accident-free for 666 days.

[He] grew nervous in early 2009 as the number of accident-free days crept into the 600s. As the company's safety calendar approached day 666, Hyatt said he approached a manager and explained that wearing it would force him "to accept the mark of the beast and to be condemned to hell."

Ah, religious literalists. They're fun to have around when you need a laugh.

Let's start a rumor, just for snickers: Herman Cain's 999 plan is actually a smokescreen to disguise the fact that he's the anti-Christ. You have to turn it UPSIDE DOWN to get the real meaning! Really! I heard it from a very reliable source who attends church three times a week!

Dammit. Stupid northeastern lefty journalists are screwing up my rumor-mongering.

As to the article, I find it interesting that Mr Wolf's 'critique' of Cain's plan consists entirely of ad hominem attacks and oblique references to bad movies. It's not surprising, mind; just interesting.

The beauty of Cain's proposal lies in its very simplicity. However, even otherwise sensible conservatives are criticizing him for "oversimplifying the problem". Question: have we as a nation become so enamored of bureaucracy and Byzantine politics that we don't trust any proposed solution unless it's devilishly complicated and impossible for the layman to decipher? If such is the case, we are truly doomed.
