Non Gratis

A group of whiny service staffers are petitioning to legally mandate 20 percent gratuities in all American restaurants.

Here's a tip: acquire real job skills, get a real job, and you won't have to worry about it any longer.

I tip very well for good service, and the service has to be truly appalling before I stiff anyone, but it's still a gratuity--look it up in the dictionary. I understand there are people--like boofahs--who are very demanding and don't tip. Welcome to the real world. It sucks sometimes, and sometimes it sucks a lot. Suck it up.

Waiting tables is not intended to be a primary household income. You want nice things? Get a white-collar job. And bring me a clean fork while you're up.

I already feel compelled to tip between 15 and 20 percent even when the service and or food is marginal since I know the money is split among the various service people in a restaurant rather than just the waiter. Given the price of restaurant food these days it is very expensive to go out and eat even a lunch special meal. Since gratuity is a percentage and it increases with the inflation of going out to eat, I can not even say I agreed with the idea of going from 10 to 15 percent, but trying to coerce me through guilt to tip even more will simply mean I will eat at home more often or eat fast food. The service I normally get at even a "nice" restaurant is not worth even the 10 percent gratuity, and I already tip at 15 to 20 percent out of guilt. I actually hate the whole tipping concept since it is so expected at this point and not really the voluntary added pay for great service. In other words, average service should not even provide for a tip since nothing special has occurred. Maybe these overpriced restaurants should pay decent wages or the restaurant workers should get a job that pays what they think they are worth since they don't do that great of a job on average.
