A group of elephants passed a self-awareness test at the Bronx Zoo.

I hasten to point out that this does not mean they are sentient: that quality involves more complex brain functions, like understanding the consequences of one's actions and a comprehension of one's own mortality. Of course, by that standard the vast majority of humans under the age of 25 aren't sentient, either.

I'd say that pretty well verifies the standard.
