It is rather funny how despite years of movies and fiction stories about mankind being destroyed or enslaved by our machine creations we still seem to work so hard at actually trying to realize such creations. Don't get me wrong, I'm not Luddite, but just think I would be taking more obvious steps to ensure that the things we build can't become precisely the things we have been warned about.
The team at the Trinity site were pretty certain -- like about 85% or so -- that detonating a nuclear bomb wouldn't ignite the atmosphere in a runaway chain reaction which would destroy all life on the planet. That would have been bad, mkay? But they pushed the button anyway, because... well, it's gonna make a HUUUGE 'SPLOSION!!!1 We gotta push it if we wanna see the HUUUGE 'SPLOSION!!!1 And we most definitely wanna see the HUUUGE 'SPLOSION!!!1
