UPDATE: Definitely not in Texas, curmudgeon. Gettin' awfully close to your stomping grounds, in fact. "Skid marks were visible on the road near the crash scene." Oh dear. That don't sound good t'all, do it? =P

After reading the article, appears to be career firefighters, not volunteers. However, everyone is equally subject to "tunnel vision". Driving too fast for conditions is a common error, and getting excited and hopped up on adrenaline so that you drive faster than conditions allow to a call is unfortunately all to frequent.
In my opinion, it is more important to actually make it to the emergency than how fast you might get there.
