That didn't take long

Barney Franks response to the attack yesterday

"I'm glad you raised that, because it gives me a chance to make a point I've felt strongly about," said Frank. "In this terrible situation, let's be very grateful that we had a well-funded, functioning government. It is very fashionable in America, and has been for some time to criticize government, belittle public employees, talk about their pensions, talk about what people think ... of [their] health care. Here we saw government in two ways perform very well. ... I never was as a member of Congress one of the cheerleaders for less government, lower taxes. No tax cut would have helped us deal with this or will help us recover. This is very expensive."

Why try and make statements that would help bring people together, when you can politicize a tragedy.

Barney's take on the benefit of government is also a manipulation of what most "small government" people believe, which has much more to do with smaller national government than state and local. The people responding yesterday were generally local and I'm sure to some lesser degree state. Given it is an internationally attended and watched event, I'm sure there were some national law enforcement and security people around, but that's not who was responding to the injured that he is pointing at as evidence of large government is better. The states being left to determine how much and what kind of government and laws they develop is far more acceptable since if you as an individual or a company don't like what your state is doing, you have more ability to influence change, or as some gun related companies have done recently, leave the state and go to one you like better. Leaving your country because you can't live with some federal law is far more difficult. Barney, don't you have some consulting to do for goldman sucs or some other group of theives you pos.

It was largely a local response. Of course, the Feds jumped in and are now leading the investigation, due mostly to the Feds having the resources to better handle a bombing (funny how that works). Fire, EMS, and Police response is an expensive business, as Frank points out, however, local and state can't fund a response properly due to the Federal mandates for unfunded social programs regional governments are imposed with. Which leaves Obama and Frank the position to step in and be the hero by borrowing more Chinese money to throw at a response. All of which is nice and touchy-feely, but of no practical value.
The real credits go to the friends, neighbors, bystanders, and volunteers who launched into action as the blast echoes died down.
