WWII in Photos

The Atlantic's 20-part photographic retrospective of WWII. There are hundreds of fascinating pictures, many of them very rare. The photo below, for example, is of the split second when a Japanese bomb detonates on the deck of the USS Enterprise during the battle of the Eastern Solomons in 1942. The photographer was killed by the explosion.

Yeah, that's crazy-low. If the pilot so much as sneezes they're doing the aquaforce cartwheel.

Not surprising, though; anyone who would bring a sword to a machinegun fight can't be the brightest combatant in the world.
