Stormtrooping for the kids
See it here.
Jacob French has gone on a stroll across the continent of Australia to raise $50,000 Australian ($53,000 U.S.) for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. He started about a week ago and will walk around 3,000 miles from Perth to Sydney – 25 miles per day, five days a week. But there’s one thing …
He’s dressed as a “Star Wars” stormtrooper.
A member of the 501st Legion, a worldwide “army” of dress-up “Star Wars” fans, French ran a half-marathon in October while wearing his stormtrooper uniform, he wrote on his fundraising page. He said that’s when he got the idea for “Troopertrek” – even though “the suit was restrictive and got quite hot while I was running.”

Sadly, you may be right. I hope he has the sense to leave it alone since it's a charity event, but Lucas has been descending into insanity -- or at least senility -- for several years now. He doesn't seem to give a crap about public relations or image. And we won't even talk about the disaster that was the last three movies. *shudder*
Oh come on. They were almost as good as the last three Star Trek movies. Wait, is that actually saying anything? Never mind, carry on.
I've met several folks with the 501st over the years at different conventions. They actually raise quite alot for charity...somewhere around $2-3million last year I heard, mostly for children's charities. They're good eggs.
They are careful to avoid running afoul of Lucasfilm IP issues by not selling costumes or any other products or items that Lucas owns the right to. Everyone is expected to make or otherwise provide their own gear. They also don't charge for appearances or stuff they do in costume, it's all just charitable donations.
And yes, even though the trooper armor is "light" molded plastic, I'm told the full kit gets quite weighty and hot after a bit.
