Friday Timewaster Needed

In the latest episode of my on-going odyssey with the Silliest IT Department EVAR, the Keystone Kops have decided to block the internet. Well, not the entire thing; just stuff like YouTube, music streaming, photo storage, social collaboration software, game sites, entertainment sites... you know, anything remotely interesting.

While one might be tempted to leap to the conclusion that this is merely implementation of the draconian censorship measures so common in Big Business nowadays, that is not the case. No, that would be welcome compared to the real reason, which is that their shiny new web-based applications software is a resource hog from Hell. It is crouching over our offices, sucking down CPU cycles and bandwidth like a giant, bloated silicon tick, eagerly vacuuming every little bit and byte of computerness into its voracious maw. The database code is apparently the most inefficient ever written, requiring hundreds more calls than one would expect for even the simplest query, thus effectively rendering our multiple T1 and T3 lines little more than dial-up modems.

So, in true corporate fashion, the Powers That Be Stupid have decided that instead of fixing the real problem -- a poorly-coded application suite that is already several million dollars over budget and far less efficient than what it is replacing -- they will simply shut down the intarwebz.

I can still post here for now (obviously), but multimedia posts are out of the question. Accordingly, I shall have to ask the Minions of Apathy to supply your expected dosage of Friday games, videos, &c.

On the bright side, it's still a private employee-owned company that is fun to work for and which is paying me gobs of stock (that's ill-gotten gain in Lefty parlance), which will allow me to retire in style fit for a nobleman. Accordingly, I bite my tongue and march onward. I can't really complain -- but I've never let that stop me before.

Viva la capitalism! I only wish it were easier to weed the idiots out of the system.

This is why The Fates gave us smartphones and 3G enabled iPads old bean! :)

I take my iPad to work everyday to ensure my unfiltered access to da' Interwez is always at my discretion, not Network Security's.

Of course having a free moment to actually use it...well...that's another matter entirely.
