Eating your ill-gotten gains has apparently become something of a sport among Russian civil servants when they sense Johnny... er, Ivan Law closing in:

Crooked civil servant Anton Gritsay has set a new record for eating the evidence after munching his way through a 900-Euro bribe to stop it being seized as evidence.

However, the head of the emergencies ministry in Zelenograd, Russia, failed to escape the long arm of the law after determined officers took him to a hospital. Surgeons recovered seven of the notes from his stomach - enough to see him taken to court.

Eating bribes has become a popular trend in Russia, leading to the league table that started in March 2010 when a policeman ate a 50-Euro bribe in the Chelyabinsk region. The previous record holder was another police officer from the Saratov region who swallowed 370 Euros in March 2011.

I deal with city and county bureaucrats on a depressingly frequent basis as part of my job. Several among them would look quite fetching as recipients of the Burly-Man-to-the-Head treatment like ol' Anton there. It'd be a character-building experience for them.
