...water. It's a double-header, as a non-swimmer jumps in to rescue a drowning non-swimmer:
Um..."call out directions to the drowning man"? Such as what? "Yo, esé! Like, don't drown! Like, chu know... flap your arms or something, homes!"
Uncle Chuck is calling this one a win and taking the rest of the week off.
Hernan had told the family that he and his co-workers frequented Leighton Park to pluck shellfish from the river and that the water there was only waist-high. When his cousins hesitated, Hernan, 25, dove in first. But he quickly sunk to the bottom, recalled Frank Gonzalez, a cousin who went to the park that day.
None of the men knew how to swim. Three cousins looked for rope or wood to drag Hernan to shore. A fourth stayed behind to call out directions to the drowning man, and while no one was looking, Francisco, 20, jumped in to rescue his brother.
As Francisco struggled in the water, Hernan surfaced about 20 feet from shore, Frank Gonzalez said. Francisco slipped under before Hernan disappeared for the last time.
