Testosterone Gushers

A bit of amusing social commentary in Massachusetts:

The head of the local police union is calling for the resignation of a town official, who referred to members of the force as "testosterone gushers"...

"I mean, have you seen their shoulders? They're huge. Their shirts are tight, they are busting out of them. Testosterone is just a metaphor.

"If I was in trouble, I'd want one of those big moose to be there," she said.

Pretty funny--and, in my experience, accurate.

"I don't think that she likes police officers or, at least, male officers," [said Sgt. Thomas Plourde, president of the Police Officers of Westport Alliance].

::sigh::

No, lunkhead; that's not what she's saying. But, like many people of your profession, you tend to forget that you're simply a necessary evil. Too many criminals results in anarchy, and too many cops results in a police state. It's a delicate societal balancing act. People can dislike what the police represent--however necessary they are--without disliking individual policemen. I detest criminals--but far too many cops are only one step removed in both their manner and methods. So I tolerate the necessity of the police, since they represent a somewhat less-imminent threat to my freedom and happiness. And they're less likely to steal my car.

As a Marine, I was little different. Soldiers are a necessary evil, and a twenty-something jarhead is neither couth nor socially polished. He's a trained killer--and he likes being a trained killer. I did. But he's not a paragon of virtue and patriotism, as many on the far right would have you believe. He's simply a rough instrument for rough tasks, one who likes intimidating other people and blowing things up. Only later, as he matures, (if he matures; not all do), will concepts like patriotism and human rights truly begin to have meaning for him. As with policemen, one need not dislike all soldiers just because one may detest the social necessity of the military.

Capiche? No?

Nevermind. Just strap your gun back on and go body-tackle some crack dealers.
