Humility Check

This is the spiral galaxy M101. It is 25 million light-years away, and contains over 1 trillion stars.

You are looking at a thumbnail image of the most detailed photograph ever taken of any astronomical extra-galactic body. Clicking the photo above will take you to the Hubble page, where you can link to higher resolution images. If you scroll to the bottom of the sidebar, you'll see a link that takes you to a subpage where you can download extremely detailed images, including a 442 megabyte TIFF file.

I highly recommend you download it if you're on broadband; you can see thousands of tiny galaxies that are behind M101, and at least as far away from it as M101 is from us. Rememeber that this photo represents a portion of the sky so small, you could cover it entirely with the head of a pin held at arm's length. It's quite stunning, and very humbling.

Humbling indeed, and mankind keeps fighting the good fight with what else himself.
