Too Late

A well-written article from Bruce Barlett in National Review, detailing Senator Zell Miller's argument for a repeal of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

I agree with Senator Miller in principle, but I'm afraid we're already too far down the road of populist federalism to ever return to a States' rights government. The Tenth Amendment has been the laughing stock of Washington since the early '50's; the SCOTUS usually ignores it altogether, and when they do pay attention to it, it's in the wrong way entirely, (the recent wackiness concerning eminent domain is a good example.)

I see our choice of political direction as a country narrowing rapidly over the next fifty years. Unfortunately, the most likely option is empire. We face many of the same questions and problems which Rome did in the first century B.C., such as how to maintain civilization in the face of barbarian hordes, rampant internal political strife, and endemic official corruption. Their answer was Julius Caesar.

I expect the man on the white horse to appear on the American political scene any year now.
