Among Leonardo Da Vinci's many "paper inventions" -- things for which he made detailed drawings but never built -- was a musical instrument called a viola organista. It was an attempt to merge a harpsichord with a cello. The idea was to combine the rapidity and digital precision of a keyboard with the soft sounds of a stringed instrument.
A very ambitious and talented concert pianist named Slawomir Zubrzycki has built a version of this instrument. You can hear him performing various pieces on it in the video below. The sound is quite unique. You may also go here to read more about the construction and mechanics of the instrument.
