Rats!
For many years, Easter Island and the fate of its inhabitants has been one of the rallying cries for eco-alarmists. They point to it as an example, based upon very flimsy evidence, that humans who don't "live in harmony with nature" will wipe themselves out. It's worth noting, by the way, that many of these self-loathing nose-pinchers consider that a desirable outcome.
But now there's a new hypothesis: the Easter Islanders may have actually thrived through social adaptation and tenacious resource management. There's anthropological evidence which supports this hypothesis. So what is the reaction of the eco-nazis? Well, it's just more reason to be alarmed -- and NOW! The author of the linked mental drivel at NPR makes the most ridiculous analogy you've probably read all year, one involving cultural bias, misanthropy and Tang.
Gotta hand it to the lefties, they can find the bad in anything -- and if they can't find it, they'll bloody well make it up. Because it's all about activism and The Cause. It's what they live to do, even when it's pointless, counterproductive, and requires extraordinary contortions in order to arrive at the flimsiest of justifications.
