Pope Scope

US 'spied on future Pope Francis during Vatican conclave.

Yea, these guys are cool. They won't abuse, or use the information you are inputting on the Obamacare website for anything but your insurance. Go ahead...trust them, they are from the government and are here to help you.

Why anyone thinks this is news is beyond me. The US has been spying on our friends and enemies since the beginning, becoming a sanctioned function of government during WWII.
I guess pointing out the obvious is a necessary function of journalism anymore.

I think the most shocking thing about this story is that people can still be shocked by the fraud, waste, ineptitude, abuse of power and outright lies by the Feds. Even worse is how many people after this still believe that Government is a force for good and should be trusted in all aspects of our lives.
I equate them to abused spouses. Every week they know he is going to get mad and hit them, but he takes care of them and "loves" them, so what is an ass beating every once in awhile as long as I have security and the children get taken care of.

Everyone who thinks the Vatican doesn't run their own spies, please raise your hands.

Everybody spies on everybody. That's been true of international politics since Byzantium, and probably before. The real outrage here is the way Obama handled -- or more correctly, mishandled -- the entire thing. The Euro govs were fishing for outrage and they got it, because Obama and his Kiddie Korps are too inept in the foreign relations arena to realize what was actually happening and smooth it over diplomatically and PRIVATELY.

Does it anger me if the NSA / CIA / ABC / XYZ is spying on Country X or Leader Y? Not in the least. That's their job, and today's allies can easily become tomorrow's enemies. I want us to know what they're all doing and why they're doing it, because they're all doing the same thing to us and everybody else.

What I do care about is that we have competent leadership and a cohesive foreign policy, both of which we've lacked for many years now -- and I'm not just talking about Obama. Between the nation-building nonsense and the childish mismanagement of international incidents, we've become the laughing stock of world politics. Putin, Merkel, et al, are so far beyond Obama in competence there's not even a valid comparison to be made. They use him like a cheap hand puppet on a regular basis and he's too ignorant of what's happening to even be outraged about it. I don't like Obama, but he's still the representative of my country. When he looks bad, which is pretty well every minute of every day, the country looks bad.
