No Police Drones

Brouhaha in Alameda County over proposed police drones.

The [Alameda County] sheriff sparred publicly with dissenters from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Both activist groups have argued forcefully for the county to impose much stricter privacy limitations, [on the use of drones by police], and some worried that they could further be weaponized.

“We will not use this for surveillance,” Ahearn re-iterated. “We will not use this for weaponry.”

Well in that case you don't need them at all, do you? Similar statements from human history:

"The SA exists for the sole purpose of ensuring public safety."

"This Revolution is for the People of France."

"Of course I won't cum in your mouth."

Sorry, but I'm with the EFF and the ACLU on this one. Militarization of the police is a no-no, um-kay? There is a reason it is illegal to arm police helicopters. It never -- NEVER -- results in anything good when the line between police and soldiers begins to blur. I don't even like them having SWAT teams, though I acknowledge a limited necessity for such.

I have 100 Club stickers on my car. We give every year. I support police and I'm glad someone is doing the thankless job. But I do not trust policemen. I don't mean an individual police officer; I have family and friends who are police officers and they are all good men. I mean in the larger sense: people in positions of authority over the public, authority which can easily be abused to further the ends of unscrupulous demagogues. Suspicion and mistrust are your primary defense against tyrants and totalitarianism. Do not become complacent.

No police drones.

We are edging closer to a police state. Disarm law-abiding citizens and arm the police more like an army.
