Thursday Tunes

William Ackerman is the founder of the Windham Hill record label, the mainstay of many New Age artists in the 1980s. While he sold the label to BMI a while back, he still records and performs from time to time.

This piece is an early work called "Pink Chiffon Tricycle Queen," from his 1976 album In Search of the Turtle's Navel. You'll notice a peculiar power and clarity to his guitar playing. It comes from his habit of off-tuning (sometimes called non-standard tuning), where the strings are tuned to a different pitch than convention dictates. Consequently, he is one of those artists who can make a guitar really come to life.
