Cycling for Dollars

"Hi, it's us again -- your old buds, General Motors! Um.. more monies, pleez!"

President Obama is proud of his bailout of General Motors. That’s good, because, if he wins a second term, he is probably going to have to bail GM out again. The company is once again losing market share, and it seems unable to develop products that are truly competitive in the U.S. market.

That's the true Achilles' heel of fascism*: the government buying controlling interest is just aggravating the problem, because it removes the market incentive -- i.e., if you can't produce successful products, you go out of business. When Daddy Gummint is seated in the corner office, if a product fails, you just go back to the taxpayer with your hand out.** Once the government is in control of a company's finances, they have to constantly whip the horse to keep it moving. Unless that government is willing to throw employees of state-invested companies into the stalag for failing to perform, it's a financial death spiral with only one possible outcome. Fascism worked (sort of) for Hilter because he did exactly that.

As for GM, they were flailing around in the economic tar pit long before Mr Soetoro threw our tax money at them. That's because their products have been crap for decades. The last two GM cars I owned are the last two GM cars I'll ever own.

* - Something almost forgotten post-World War II is the fact that fascism originated as an economic theory, not a political ideology. The basic idea is that the state is a partner -- usually a controlling partner -- in all of the major corporate entities within a nation's economy; transportation, energy and food were the most commonly suggested industries for fascist control when the idea was developed a century ago. The idea was that it would provide economic stability and prevent major swings in inflation. It was ultimately discredited and abandoned, until foundering nations like Nazi Germany scooped it up in desperation. While the more common political meaning of the word is now dominant in common usage, it doesn't change the fact that what Obama is engaging in is an almost pure form of fascism as an economic tool. In his case, it is being used as a more palatable method of forcing Americans to accept the long term goal of the Left: European-style soft socialism. (Note to any liberals and Obamaites who might read this: No, I am not calling Obama a Nazi. Learn to read.)

** - A similar problem has arisen in the so-called military-industrial complex. Large defense companies are paid up front with tax dollars to develop big projects, after which a competition is held and the winner chosen for production contracts. Win or lose, the companies take very little risk. It is again an interference with the free market, and one about which Eisenhower tried to warn us.

The entire purpose of the Progressive agenda is to tank the economy. That way, they can have socialism, we'll be the servants, and they the masters. Printing more money, stimulus and buyouts, and the numerous public assistance programs will likely bring this to fruition in our lifetimes. We can no longer depend on the American public to resist.
