Ambush. Tower defense with a twist.
The Austrian army during the Napoleonic Wars armed special "ranger" units with the Girandoni air rifle, which fired a .46 caliber bullet at velocities comparable to a contemporary musket. Their mission was to ambush enemy troop and supply columns from afar. Since the weapon was very quiet when fired (compared to a musket, anyway), had a high rate of fire and there was no bloom of smoke from the muzzle, the theory was that the ambushers could beat a hasty retreat after firing a few volleys into the unfortunate ambushees. There is no credible evidence as to whether or not they were effective in this role.
