Re-arrange the Deck Chairs

to save the environment

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — An effort to allow only reusable bags at Los Angeles grocery stores may sound like a political long-shot, but one city councilman thinks the public will eventually warm up to the initiative.

In typical Liberal fashion, they try to legislate "correct" think. Now, screw whatever you want and stick whatever kind of chemical you want into your body, we will pay for your medical care, but use a plastic bag!?!?!!!! Lock him away!

The measure introduced by City Councilman Paul Koretz would prohibit all single-use plastic and paper bags in L.A. supermarkets and would require stores to sell or provide complimentary reusable or fiber bags only or risk a fine.

Good job Paul. Ignore the rampant spending and huge debts by governments, lets get those evil plastic bags. Personally, I think the plastic bags were the second worse invention of the modern age (cel phones are the first) They don't hold alot of stuff, they tear, and they fall over when you put them down spilling everything into the trunk, and yes, they are a major eyesore along every highway and roadway in America, but it should be the consumer who makes the grocery and retail stores change, not Government. Whole foods is going reusable by choice, not by government mandate.

What's worse, reusable bags are both a health hazard and an environmental hazard.

Bacteria builds up in the bags and they turn into a breeding ground for lil' nasties. You can wash them, of course, but TUTTUT! All those nasty chemicals in detergents, and you're using up more water and electricity!

And the cotton used to make the bags... well, ask any farmer what a damaging crop cotton is for the soil. Four year fallows are the norm with cotton farming. Oh, and don't forget the increased surface albedo from all those cotton fields; that just adds to the greenhouse effect!

So what's the smartest thing to do? Go back to paper bags, of course -- which, you may remember, is where we started before all this silliness began a few decades ago. You can even recycle them if that's your thing.

Poor little ignorant environmentalists... they just can't win, but they keep on chasing their tails. Like a dog performing the same trick, you can admire their tenacity while still laughing at their blatant stupidity.
