Gesticular Gaming

You may remember that the only interesting scene out of the Tom Cruise disaster Minority Report was the one where the lead character was shown controlling a computer via hand gestures. Or at least that's the way I remember the movie, as it promptly put me to sleep. Anyway, some nerdy type has hacked a Kinect, (the motion sensor add-on for the Microsoft CrapBox), to be usable on a PC, and he has produced some interesting results.

The video below demonstrates its use, and it is somewhat reminiscent of the movie scene -- though not nearly as refined, obviously. Remember that current software interfaces are designed around the limitations of a mouse. Give this technology ten years to mature, both in hardware and software design, and it will be truly impressive.

Then we can sit around waving our hands in empty air while talking to a machine. By the definitions of a few decades past, we will all appear to be quite mad -- and that may not be far from the truth.
