It is an axiom that flawed ideas which have become entrenched in culture must run head-on into physical reality before they are eventually discarded. I suspect that much of the currently flawed cosmological theory will be with us for many centuries to come, until we actually get close enough to examine these phenomena in a direct and non-proxied manner.
In the meantime, at least they're still collecting data, however badly they may be mis-interpreting it. Much like Tycho Brahe, at least their data will be of value when the Kepler of cosmological theory eventually comes along and pulls their punk cards.
The electric universe theorists may already be cast in that role, but without the aforementioned direct physical interaction there is no way to know for sure. Newtonian physics and Keplerian mechanics work just fine for what we do in space right now, (which ain't bloody much). It will require an elevation of engineering application to the Einsteinian level before the fatal flaws in traditional cosmo-theory can no longer be ignored just to preserve a few careers.
