The Pacific

A site about the new HBO series from "Band of Brothers" creators Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. The series follows the Marines of Third Battalion, Fifth Marines (1st MARDIV) through the Pacific during World War II.

This is of particular interest to me, as Fifth Marines is one of the two units I served in, though I was in Second Battalion rather than Third. I remember the regimental colors (the unit "flag") being so heavy with battle honors -- many from WWII -- that the regimental honor guide had to be an exceptionally strong Marine to carry it during parade functions. I'm proud to say that we added one of those streamers in 1991, though I'd not dishonor the colors by comparing my experiences to the brutal, months-long, grinding battles of the Pacific. The Marines of World War II are held in almost religious awe by every Marine who has come after them, and rightly so.

The Fifth Marine Regiment is the most heavily decorated infantry regiment in the entire history of the United States Marine Corps. When you watch the series and see recreations of the battles of Gaudalcanal, Iwo Jima and Okinawa, you'll understand why. I'm biased, of course, but I don't believe they could have picked a better subject unit for the new series.

I see that it will have "Chesty" Puller in it. If it is as half as good as Band of Brothers, it should be very good.
