Sad Meal
Oh, the horror:
So this has been going on for ten years, but it hasn't been an issue until now...? ::sniff:: What's that odor...?
Ah-ha! Now I know what that odor is: it's the pungent aroma of ignorant hippie. She probably force-feeds tofu and bean sprouts to herfamily communal pod unit. Gods forbid she should let her child have a reward for doing well in school.

An Orlando parent said she was appalled when her 9-year-old daughter brought home her report card cover and it contained an advertisement for McDonald's promising free Happy Meals for good grades, attendance and behavior.
McDonald's paid $1,600 to print 27,000 jackets for elementary school report cards. Before that, Pizza Hut printed the covers for the past 10 years, she said.

Regina Klaers, a district spokeswoman, said school officials are not aware of the group's demands and had a complaint from only one parent.
The issue came to light last week when Susan Pagan's daughter Cathy, a fourth-grader at Red Bug Elementary School, brought home her report card and wanted to get a free Happy Meal because she earned good grades.
Pagan told her daughter, "Our family does not eat at fast food chains."

I do not mind Susan Pagan deciding not to permit her child to eat fast food. However, how dare the self righteous, sanctimonious, crystal gripping, food Nazi attempt to dictate what the children of other parents should be permitted to eat as a reward for having earned good grades. Typical liberal mindset of believing they are better than everyone else thus, should be permitted to determine the rules for everyone.

"Crystal-gripping."
I do believe that's a new addition to the lexicon. I'll write it down for future deployment, begging your permission. =o)
Funny, I always thought it was a conservative tactic to force their beliefs down the throats of everyone around them. If you don't believe me, do a wiki search on a strange concept called "religion". Next you'll tell me Republicans are pushing for centralized government power and more government spending, which would be absolutely ridiculous. ;)
Tell you what, rather than throwing around labels, why don't we look into the actual FACTS of the issue?
Pagan said she is not opposed to fast food, but she said there are professional and appropriate ways in addressing sponsorship and "not directly bombarding our children with this marketing."
It should be noted that this parent did NOT file a frivolous lawsuit and involve the court system, but voiced her complaint directly to the school system which is well within her rights. She is not trying to force her opinion on others, but trying to prevent corporate interests from manipulating her child's opinion unfairly. By offering McDonalds food as a so-called "reward" for good grades, they put the parents in the position of having to choose between the child learning the values of hard work and its rewards or maintaining a health lifestyle. However, children do not understand that they are the target of the suggestive marketing tactics of a selfishly profit-motivated corporation, but only know that "Mommy won't let me have a hamburger, and that's SO UNFAIR!"
"Our family does not eat at fast food chains," Pagan said. "And now I'm the bad guy."
McDonalds is not doing this with the child's interest in mind; if they were they should start by serving food that is fit for human consumption. They would also be concerned with the potential damage they are causing to the (already challenging) parent-child relationship. The ONLY thing that McDonalds is after is the money the parents will spend when they bring their child in for the "free" meal.
So who is trying to force their view on others? McDonalds and the school board are doing the "dictating" by offering their products as the only possible "reward" for good grades. This parent is objecting to that practice and is right to do so.
"The promotion takes in-school marketing to a new low"
...and that is the simple truth.
I pay property taxes so that other peoples' children can go to school and get an education, not so that McDonalds (or Pizza Hut, for that matter) can use them as a target for their marketing campaigns. Corporate interests already have a strangle-hold on our government, and are now using their influence to shamelessly target children. I applaud this parent's concern for the health and welfare of their child and their courage to stand up and voice their opinion.
