Eee

Asus is preparing to launch an itty-bitty laptop called the Eee. This sort of thing has been tried before, of course, but Asus may be onto something this time. There are three primary reasons I say that:

1) It's all solid-state with an 8GB flash drive.

2) It's got integrated 802.11g connectivity.

3) It's only two hundred bucks.

Perhaps the most interesting fact, however, is that Asus chose to go with a customized Linux OS, rather some on-going disaster like Windows CE or ::shudder:: Windows Mobile. The start up time is 10 seconds; five seconds for shutdown.

If Asus can market and sell this thing properly, it could be the Big Opportunity for which Linux has been waiting.

Here's hoping!

8GB Solid State Drive.... You know, but for the bloat that is windows, I could almost see "the next thing" in PCs being systems where your "System Drive" is solid state, and you only have hard drives for storing you data, music, movies, documents, and of course...pr0n.

In fact, I think I could run a nice and functional install of OSX on 8GB since I think my Mac Cube only has 10 GB drive in it.

Hmm...*wheels being to turn and creak*.
