X-47B Wins

Northrop's X-47B has won the U.S. Navy Unmanned Strike Aircraft Competition. The company has been awarded a development contract on the aircraft.

In just a few years, we can be blowing up ragheads from the comfort of air conditioned offices. Now that's progress!

The Air Force and Navy spend millions to prevent a simgle pilot and his aircraft from being destroyed. Yet the Army and Marines sent their troops into Iraq in tin can Hummers, with severe consequences. Its good to see that more money is now being spent to upgrade the Hummers and also to develop new more bomb resistent vehicles such as those being built by Stewart & Stevenson here in the Houston area.

Preaching to the choir, here. I lost a friend -- and the United States an excellent Marine officer -- to an IED attack on a HMMWV two years ago. But, crass as it may sound to non-military men, that's just the way it works: grunts take the brunt.

Perversely, it is that reality which makes a grunt so tough and resilient. It seems that the more poorly-equipped the American fighting man, the more competent he becomes. Marines have been dealing with that reality since 1775; it's what molds the Corps.

All that said, we like nothing better than seeing a fast-mover scream overhead to dump a few thousand pounds of hate and pain on the the bastards stupid enough to oppose us in our goals. Dead enemies are immensely satisfying, however they may get dead.

I remember the coolest thing when I was in Iraq was seeing a b-52 strike going on. It felt like an earthquake and I knew things were gonna be easier for us.
My personal opinion is that we as a nation are too timid when it comes to using force. We become too bogged down in what the world will think of us and not concentrating on blowing stuff up and killing the bad guys.
