Railgun

The U.S. Navy has publicly demonstrated a production model railgun. It's an 8-megajoule replacement for the current chemical-powered 5" guns on U.S. warships, and will also replace the TLAM (Tomahawk Land Attack Missile) in non-nuclear and shorter range applications. The gun has a maximum range of 250 nautical miles--and a coolness factor unmeasurable by modern science.

We've been hearing about these things for decades now, but there's a difference this time: this is a real, functional, and soon-to-be deployable system.
