Chinese Communist Party chief Hu Jintao has vowed to "purify" the Internet, state media reported on Wednesday, describing a top-level meeting that discussed ways to master the country's sprawling, unruly online population.

But he made it clear that the Communist Party was looking to ensure it keeps control of China's Internet users, often more interested in salacious pictures, bloodthirsty games and political scandal than Marxist lessons.

Hu told officials to intensify control even as they seek to release the Internet's economic potential.

I think the majority of Chinese businessmen and forward-thinking Chinese government officials have come to understand there is only one desirable outcome in capitalism versus communism. Dinosaurs like Hu, however, cling desperately to the fading wisps of the Maoist fantasy.

At least it'll slow them down for a bit. Because when China finally does get cranked up into full-blown economic empire mode, we're going to need all the head start we can get.
