Hot Planet, Frozen Birds

Global warming is threatening to kill rare cormorants and spoonbills on the Danube -- via the curious expedient of freezing them to death.

Not to worry, however; Californians are riding to the rescue by blocking the construction of coal-fired power plants in other states. This will, of course, have the effect of driving up electricity bills for Californians, but it's all in a good cause, yes?

Oh, and if you read deeper into the article, you'll find this move won't actually impact the costs or profits of the electricity companies, since their plants are grandfathered and they are given operating exemptions. The consumer cost will, of course, still go up by a hefty percentage.

So when you Californians can't pay your electricity bill without downgrading your dinner menu to ramen noodles and pond water, just think of all those poor birds you (might) be saving from a manufactured threat. Self-righteous back-patting is quite nourishing, after all...

Do you think the warmies ever bother to look down and notice those big clown shoes they're all wearing? No, I don't think so, either.
