An Institution of Higher Protestation

A group of "protestors" at UCLA have decided that the Coca-Cola Company is responsible for several deaths caused by the on-going civil war in Columbia. How, exactly, this is the responsibility of said corporation is something they're a little vague about:

One student began the rally by announcing the group's intent to silence Coke's representatives. He told everyone that when the time came for the representatives to speak in their defense at the meeting inside, he would signal for all to scream and holler.

"You can't speak here," he yelled. "It's our school and we'll tell you when to speak."

From Mussolini's mouth to their ears.

I asked James, between his many speeches, why he's mad at Coke and what evidence he has of its guilt. "Direct your conversation to one of the organizers," he said. "I'm just here in support."

An excellent example of how modern college campuses are creating in many of their students a witch's brew of fascism, communism, and ego, all blended with an overweening entitlement mentality and topped with a generous dollop of willful ignorance.

That bodes well for the future of a representative republic, doesn't it?

I guess being "Politically Correct" doesn't actually require being correct anymore.. or even slightly aware of actual political situations.

I'd rip these people a new one, but the article does a pretty good job on its own. Although the caption under one of the pictures caught my attention:

Third-year French student Pouneh Behin helps lead a protest by Coke-Free Campus last Friday

Who in the world would take a French student seriously? Why spend thousands of dollars to learn a new way to say "I surrender" and protest American companies? You can just move there and do that for free. Good luck finding a job, though...

He proceeded to compare what Coke hasn't done to "apartheid, Vietnam, the genocide of black people in the Sudan region."

if one bandies the word genocide for every event that happens that one disagrees with, genocide loses its meaning.

"Two black men were killed last night outside a nightclub, observers described it as genocide"

I'm surprised that hasn't happened yet. Wait maybe it has I don't watch the news much.

To Banduar,

My name is Pouneh Behin and I am a fourth-year French Literature BA and Biology BS at the University of California, Los Angeles. Please refrain from incorrectly assuming that I would not be qualified enough to take a political stance due to the simple fact that one of my focuses of studies is a French major. In fact, some of us don't have to spend thousands of dollars on our studies to simply learn how to say "I stand up for the oppressed" in a different language... that is only if we have a certain intelligence level that many do not possess. this article was very unprofessional and incorrectly quoted, the Daily Bruin later apologized for being unprofessional and biased. If you would like to take a stance on this please read the follow-up articles on this case, which can all be found at the following web url: www.dailybruin.com . For more information on the Coca-Cola case, please visit www.cokefreecampus.org or the national www.killercoke.org . Coca-Cola has recently been banned South India where they were undertaking human rights and environmental violations for many years. Articles on the case of Coca-Cola can also be found in The Nation.
