Foot in Mouth Disease

Fundy has linked to an article in which Richard Belzer, the actor of Law & Order fame, shows the world that he's also a raving lunatic. Belzer asserts that modern, professional soldiers are "19 and 20-year-old kids who couldn't get a job." He goes on to say, "you know, the soldiers are not scholars, they're not war experts." (Emphasis added.)

Even the wacky, far Left-field dweller Bill Maher balked at that last comment. When you become too radical for Maher, you've truly gone beyond the pale. One would think these actors would learn to keep their mouths shut about their politics. I suppose, however, that would require some humility--a quality many of them seem to lack completely.

(Hat-tip to Fundy)

But Belzar's an actor!
That is the second highest office a human can hold, second to only rock singers! You really should show more respect.

Heh. That certainly seems to be the contention among most of Hollywood's "elite," (a more appropiate descriptive term than they probably realize.)

I find their self-important attitude amusing, inasmuch as actors have historically been near the bottom rung of the social ladder. Up until just last century, they were universally looked upon as tramps, accorded even less respect than whores and common footpads.

While I understand the cultural dynamics that have driven actors to near-heroic social niches within the context of modern Westernized society, it is nonetheless frustrating to watch such one-dimensional, self-absorbed nincompoops use their fame as a bully pulpit. In fairness, though, it's really only a few of them. If you think on it, you never hear about the political views of the vast majority of actors, athletes, and and other entertainers. Unfortunately, it's always the loudest mouth that gets the press coverage.

This is classic:
Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke says he turned down the chance to discuss climate change with Tony Blair because the British prime minister has "no environmental credentials."

See what you get to do when you hold the highest office in the land.
