Crash Dummies

Some stupid Alabama legislator (whew! That was almost a redundancy) wants to pass a law requiring children up to age 12 (as in years old) to be strapped into car seats. Here's his "logic":

Rep. Thad McClammy of Montgomery argues that the bill will save lives.

McClammy recounted a recent Montgomery tragedy where a young mother backed over her child, who had gotten out of his car seat and out of the car. "Her message was, `I don't care if you are only going one foot, put the baby back in the car seat.'"

I read the above failure of inductive logic three times, just to make sure I wasn't missing something. Exactly how does that non-sequiter of a paragraph justify strapping a 12 year-old (or even an 8 year-old) into a booster seat?

No matter; I like Jack Williams, the legislator opposing the bill:

"If I had been in a booster seat until the age of 12, I'd be scarred far worse than I am now," Williams said. "You can't protect kids from every possible thing that might go wrong."

Williams vows to amend the bill, if necessary, to also require children to wear fire-retardant suits and crash helmets.

Comedy.
