Hitachi Maxell and Bell Labs subsidary InPhase Technologies have created and successfully tested a holographic storage medium. It will be mass-marketed next year in 300GB format, but will ultimately hold 1.6 terabytes per disk.
The transfer rate is passable at about 120 MB/s, but they carefully avoided mentioning seek time, so I don't see it supplanting the trusty old magnetic hard drive just yet.
