Spy vs. Spew

Some potential good news on the Bond front:

"We're trying to reinvent Bond. He's 28 - no Q, no gadgets."

It's supposed to be based around the first of Ian Fleming's books, Casino Royale.

I certainly hope they can move back toward the more complex, spy-oriented formula that made From Russian With Love such a successful and impressive film. In my mind, they'd do really well to "go retro," and set the plot in the early 1960's Cold War. But that may just be nostalgia speaking.

One thing is for certain: they can't possibly do any worse. With one exception, the last dozen or so Bond films have been so hokey, self-serving, and just downright bad, they were actually painful to watch. For an example of what a good spy thriller is supposed to look like, watch Ronin. Better yet, The Russia House. Or even Firefox; the first two-thirds of that movie is actually a spy thriller.

they just need to add a floating little green alien that grants wishes and the'll be all set.

In My Flawless Opinion, they need to cut the budget by at least 1/2 and fire anybody involved in the project who has a marketing degree.

Agreed, on both counts. The fat budgets generated a StupidEffects(tm) mentality, which had the net effect of creating some wholly unbelievable and just downright silly scenes.

Hollywood, by and large, has forgotten the cardinal rule of the storyteller: good stories are about people, not places and machines. If you start with a good plot, a well-written script, and good acting, you don't need special effects to make a successful film. The British have been proving this point for years.
