"Investigators used a "sneak-and-peak" warrant available under the USA Patriot Act to enter the U.S. house on July 2 and later installed cameras and listening devices in the home to monitor activities."
Sure.. the Patriot Act is only being used to stop Terrorism. Right.
If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that the warrant was issued because the law enforcement types were concerned the "drug runner" thing might be a cover for terrorists setting up a cross-border conduit. In that case, it would be a perfectly legitimate application of the Patriot Act.
That said, I am also quite leery about the Act. It has huge potential for abuse, and its employment by authorities must be monitored very closely. The ACLU can actually serve a useful purpose in that respect; it at least partly makes for all the stupidity and silliness they engage in on a daily basis.
