Now Wait Just A Minuteman...

I can only surmise that we--meaning the United States--have slipped into some weird, alternate dimension when things like this happen:

U.S. Border Patrol agents have been ordered not to arrest illegal aliens along the section of the Arizona border where protesters patrolled last month because an increase in apprehensions there would prove the effectiveness of Minuteman volunteers, The Washington Times has learned.

Of course, everyone in the chain of command denies it, but this tracks perfectly with the bizarre pattern of behavior the Bush Administration has demonstrated with regard to the Mexican Border.

..."credible sources" within the Border Patrol also had told [Rep. Tom Tancredo (CO-R)] of the decision by Naco supervisors to keep new arrests to a minimum, saying he was angry but not surprised.

"It's like telling a cop to stand by and watch burglars loot a store but don't arrest any of them," he said. "This is another example of decisions being made at the highest levels of the Border Patrol that are hurting morale and helping to rot the agency from within.

This is a whitewash; the actual orders are obviously coming from much higher up the chain of command. Much higher...

Does Bush actually want a war with Mexico? Not that it would be much of a war, mind you. It's the only explanation I have left that makes any sort of sense at all. Well, that or he's deliberately inviting another major terrorist attack in order to rebuild momentum for his foreign policy. (That's cynical, yes; but this is high politics we're talking about. Never exclude even the most cynical of ideas, because they're just as likely to be the correct answer.)

In any case, there is one indisputable fact: the problem has become much worse under Bush's watch. And he's not only failing to take corrective measures, he's actually fanning the flames. Obviously there's a plan somewhere--no doubt formulated based upon information and intelligence sources not available to me--but that makes it no less baffling or less infuriating.
