Svelte Shelter

An interesting photo tour of an upscale fallout shelter from a 1964 issue of LIFE magazine. I enjoyed the photos, but this bit of snark from Vanessa Grall, the young author of the article, really irritated me:

And then of course when you realise you’re just being a little paranoid about Soviet nuclear bombs, you can always go upstairs for a little fresh oxygen to the brain.

Only soft-handed children born after the Cold War would make such comments. Those of us who lived through it know it wasn't paranoia at all. I realize the author probably thought she was being terribly funny, but that only serves to highlight the depths of her ignorance. Fortunately for her, Ronald Reagan had the foresight and fortitude to destroy the Soviet Union without firing a shot. I'm glad she can sleep safely at night; too bad she isn't nearly as appreciative.
