Party Lines

Here is an opinion piece that discusses why we vote the way we do. Most of it, just discusses some studies that were released, but this little nugget was buried in the text:

So here’s a trick question: What group historically despised the free market, embraced policies like government-supplied jobs, guaranteed retirement and free healthcare? They were zealous animal rights advocates, promoted gun control, abortion and euthanasia. They were fanatical environmentalists, endorsed a healthy lifestyle, railed against smoking, promoted organic veganism and sponsored alternative medicine. And in their universities, they promoted racial quotas and held to strict, politically correct, speech codes.

Any guesses?

The Democratic Party you say? Not quite. The correct answer points to one of the most reviled groups in history -- the Nazis during the 1930s. Their motto, “Gemeinnutz geht vor Eigennutz,” loosely translated meant: Service before self; the good of the many is more important than the good of the individual. The motto was nothing more than propaganda; meant to make you feel good, and not much more; a feel-good sentence for a very bad agenda.

She even goes on to say that Democrats are not Nazis, but most Germans were not Nazis either. What they were as she states is apathetic and unengaged until it was to late.I would bet good money that most people, if asked, could not tell you who their Senators are, and damn sure couldn't tell you who their Congressman is. Representatives in state government, city council, hell, even local school boards don't want you to know who they are until election time and then they only want you to know what party they are affiliated with. I consider myself pretty engaged and I have trouble knowing all the people on the ballot and what they stand for. Now consider someone who knows more about the Kardashians than who is the Secretary of Health and Human services. People like that don't care who is in charge or what the Government does as long as they know what Miley Cyrus wore at the Music awards, or who Jennifer Aniston is dating.
