Beer Belongs
Promotional ads from the U.S. Brewers Foundation which appeared in LIFE magazine in the 1950s. If this style of art is your thing (it's definitely mine) you're in luck: click here for dozens more alcohol-laden images of yesteryear. Safety disclaimer: power tools and beer don't mix. You should only consume whiskey when using power tools. Beer is for guns.

Douglas Crockwell is probably the second best un"known" artist of the fifties and sixties. His style was very similar to Norman Rockwell and many times his work would be mistaken for Norm's, but if you look you can see he did have a style of his own and his work I think ranks right up there with Rockwell in capturing the America of a bygone age.
Okay, I had to look up the name to make sure you weren't having me on. Crockwell? Really? Hey, I grew up with you, man; I learned to trust-but-verify. =P
Now that I'm aware he's real, I agree with you. There is something about his style that is very attractive to me. I like the way he tends to render backgrounds loosely, sometimes in an almost impressionistic manner, but uses near-photographic techniques to paint people. It puts the focus on their faces and stances, allowing the painting to tell a story.
