Belated Victory
We won the Vietnam War. I know that's not conventional wisdom, but we did; it just took a few decades longer than we thought it would. How do I know? Allow me to present Exhibit A:
That's a newly-opened "art" bridge in Da Nang. It is based upon the dragon depicted in the crest of one of the old royalist dynasties. It breathes fire... you know, because. It costs 85 million dollars. And, the final indignity, it was designed by an American architectural firm.
Hear that whirring sound? That's Ho Chi Minh spinning in his grave.
More importantly, though, things like this give me some hope that just maybe the deaths of 50,000 American soldiers have amounted to something more important than lining the pockets of LBJ and his witch of a wife. In that light, it is ironic that all of our planes, ships and tanks are insignificant next to our most potent weapon: the United States Dollar. It's still possible to "win" the Iraqi war -- but we won't do it with troops.
