Drankin'

It's Friday, and that means alcohol. Lots of it. If you're looking for something different this weekend, here are a couple of recommendations.

There's a new kid on the block: Lone Star Bock. Oh sure, all the beer snobs will turn their ever-so-refined noses up at it, but I am as far from a beer snob as it's possible to get. I regularly commit the cardinal sin of (*GASP*) mixing beers. The horror.

But back to the new bock. This stuff is awesome, and I can tell you why in one word: pecans. I don't know if it's intentional, but something about the combination of the roasting process and the caramel flavoring produces a very noticeable pecan taste in this brew. If you're from Texas, you like pecans. It's the law. If Lone Star is the National Beer of Texas, (and it is), pecan pie is the National Dessert of Texas. So go get ya some Lone Star Bock. If you don't like it, give it to me.

Next up is Sam Houston American Straight Whiskey. I'm not a snob when it comes to booze either, but I can tell the difference between a good sipping whiskey and bottom-barrel swill. Not that it keeps me from drinking the swill, mind you...

This stuff, however, is most definitely not swill. What I love about it is the mildness. No bite, and it has a very distinct overtone of sweetness. It's almost like a blend of Kentucky bourbon and cognac. Very delightful and inexpensive, (about $25 a bottle at my local hooch hut).

Now git! There's drankin' needs doin'.

What a great topic!
For the Texas readers, I'll throw in a relatively new brewer. Adelbert’s Brewery, They are Austin based and sell their wares in Austin, Houston, and Dallas at Spec's & Twin liquors among others.

I have a fondness for 'Dancin' Monks', but its all good. They have entertaining back stories for their beers on their website.
