Space Miner Forty-Niner
Who has the right to mine an asteroid? That's the question asked by this PopSci article. It was penned by the ever-egotisical Glenn Reynolds, who has apparently added to his burgeoning résumé the professions of writer and professor of "space law." His ultimate conclusion is that it will be the equivalent of a 19th century-style gold rush and nearly impossible to regulate in its initial stages. Whatever my opinions of Reynolds' ego, I tend to agree with him on this, and I can answer the posed question very succinctly: "Whoever gets there first with the most guns."
That's a good thing, by the way. The strength of capitalism and so-called Yankee trading is that it harnesses the most powerful human instinct -- selfishness -- and turns it toward the greater good by rapidly growing wealth for the society as a whole. Despite the fact that modern (read: leftist) scholars poo-poo the idea of manifest destiny and proliferation of democratic principles through wealth expansion, it worked. Yes, the apologists for the American Indians will piss and moan, as they always do. History is; get over it. Call it a precipitous assumption if you like, but I doubt there are Little Green Indians living in the asteroid belt.
Bring on the 'Roid Rush, I say! (Er, perhaps we'll have to find a better name for it...)

In general I agree, but I do have one minor bone to pick...
The strength of capitalism .. is that it harnesses the most powerful human instinct -- selfishness
I think it is important to emphasize that the foundation of capitalism is self-interest, not selfishness, which I think is a critical distinction.
Definition of SELFISH
1: concerned excessively or exclusively with oneself : seeking or concentrating on one's own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others
2: arising from concern with one's own welfare or advantage in disregard of others
Selfishness as defined contains an element of disregard for the welfare of others. Rational self-interest respects the self-interest of others and thereby encourages mutually beneficial trade. This is a moral distinction which requires the ability to analyze the long-term benefits of cooperative behavior on an individual level and therefore is beyond the capacity of most modern-day "liberals". Their lack of moral depth allows them to fall for the shallow propaganda of "collectivism" which SOUNDS good by claiming to place the needs of society as a whole over the needs of the individual. This is why they disparage capitalism in spite of its historic record of improving quality of life and embrace socialism despite its record of human rights abuses. However, as most readers here probably understand, society is made up entirely of individuals with unique needs so the inevitable result of dis-empowering individuals is repression and regression.
Selfishness is an anti-social vice. Self-interest is a behavioral trait shared by every single living organism and if understood properly is a virtue. To associate capitalism with selfishness propagates leftist propaganda and we cannot afford to surrender the moral high ground.
