New-fangled intrawebz

Remember PINE and gopher and vi and Mosaic? Of course you do; we're all old fogies, here. Flashback to 1995 and explore that new internet thingy with The Computer Chronicles -- which was a great show, by the way; I didn't realize how much I missed it until I watched the video.

Bah! vi was for people that didn't know how to use emacs! ..future Mac users, in other words.

EMACS? Seriously? Feh! EMACS has a built in help. Good for windows users maybe, or people that like EDLIN. vi is hardcore...no help...it almost mocks you. Its says 'Type the wrong character at the wrong place or time...I dare you...I will fuck your /etc/sysconfig and inittab beyond recognition'. Not just "not user friendly" but actively user antagonistic the way God meant serious tech to be. Unix isn't "take no prisoners" OS...we take prisoners...and then we shoot and eat them. :)

Once again bad design gets confused with good technology...

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy says of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation products that 'it is very easy to be blinded to the essential uselessness of them by the sense of achievement you get from getting them to work at all.'
'In other words - and this is the rock solid principle on which the whole of the Corporation's Galaxy-wide success is founded - their fundamental design flaws are completely hidden by their superficial design flaws.'
