Thursday Tunes

This is Vangelis' main title from the 1992 movie "1492: Conquest of Paradise." While the movie was distinctly "meh" and pretty forgettable, the music was quite the opposite: It is powerfully symphonic with a strong choral element. I've always thought of it as having Slavic overtones. I think that's because of the resemblance to the old Soviet national anthem, another very powerful piece of music. While I have nothing good to say about the Soviets (or Russians, for the most part), they certainly had an awe-inspiring anthem. Vangelis seems to have directly tapped into that morose (but simultaneously strangely uplifting) style for this piece.
