Back to the 80's

LINK

Been playing a bit more with Hulu+ on AppleTV and the wife and I have found ourselves wrapped up in watching Miami Vice.  What started as a "Hmmm, lets see how some of these old shows look on Hulu" has got us hooked.  I have to say that the show, almost 30 year old, really stands up well after all this time compared to shows today.  The visual style is distinctive, Michael Mann really knew (knows?) his stuff.  Back before super hi-tech CSI labs, before cell phones, the internet and SuperCrimeComputerSystem 2000s, in police offices with typewriters where half the characters smoked.  Only took a couple of episodes..now we are in for the whole series.  Looks and sounds great on Hulu+, minimal commercials (max length break 24 sec).

More and more, the only thing work watching on TV is reruns it seems.  Put on your Ray-Bans and your white jacket, this time we're going to nail the Columbian for good.  :)

Three things stand out in my mind about Miami Vice:

1) Edward James Olmos. The man is a consummate actor who makes any show better simply by being on screen.

2) The music. Jan Hammer doesn't get nearly enough credit for his originality in the synth music genre. (Hm. I think I just found my Thursday Tunes for this week.)

3) The hype. While it's common these days, this was the first show I remember being hyped to the moon for months prior to release. You couldn't turn on the television in the summer of '84 without seeing a teaser commercial for Miami Vice. By the time the pilot aired, half the population was expecting it to solve world hunger and cure cancer.
