Shakedown

The EU is looking for cash and Google apparently seems a likely target:

The European Commission today accused Google of abusing its dominant position in the search engine market to benefit its own advertising services at the expense of competitors. But rather than launch "formal proceedings," Europe is giving Google a chance to settle the matter.

"Now look here, youse. If youse pays us some cash now, see... we like, go away. And maybe we don't be comin' back for a few months, see? You don't wanna pay us no cash now, well you sure got a purdy wife, buddy..."

Fuck the EU. Yes, I'm predisposed to say that (fuck the EU; see, there it goes again), but this time it's in all seriousness. They're misconstruing the purpose of "anti-trust" laws -- either intentionally or through gross ignorance. Google is not going around buying up all the other search companies and re-routing their results to Google's front search page. That would be market monopolization. But the fact is that a person can still go to Bing or Yahoo or any of several other search engines if he so chooses.

If Google downgrades the search results of those with whom they are competing in other markets, that's just good business sense. Of course they're going to give preference to paying customers; I would expect Microsoft to do likewise on Bing, (and I'm sure they do). If you walk into a Chevy dealership, you're not going to see a lot of Ford brochures laying about the place.

This is about nothing more than deep pockets. The bureaucrats of this Eurotrash Union are trying to extort money from anybody they can in order to prop up their failing economies and unsupported Eurodollar. The Grecian anchor (which is painted a lovely shade of Leninist Red) is threatening to drag them all into the depths of financial collapse. Accordingly, their desperation is starting to show.

The "give them a chance to make it right" line is just code-speak for "we don't have the money to spend on tying this up in court for years and are hoping you'll give us some coin to make it go away." Give 'em nothing but the finger, Google. What are they gonna do if you refuse? Invade Greece? (Please?)
