The Allocator is Back
Even some of the crappy episodes of Voyager were ahead of the curve on social issues.

My recent infatuation with Star Trek Online, and the accompanying resurgence of my inner TrekGeek, has me contemplating watching Voyager. I have to admit that I never got past the pilot. It really pissed me off that they promptly (as in the first ten minutes) disposed of all the Evil Middle Aged White Males, leaving only two token representatives: a young one to serve as a moral punching bag, and the other a hologram who can be switched off at will. The had the effect of turning over the asylum to the all the non-male, non-white types. (And black Vulcans? Where the hell does that fit in the canon?)
Perhaps I was too harsh in my initial judgment. I have heard from some people that Voyager is much closer to Roddenberry's original vision of the Trek universe. Should I gird my loins (old, fat, white male loins, to be sure) and wade in? Or was I right to chuck the whole thing on the fire from the beginning?
On the specific topic, I just saw this in the NYT article (I'm bored; I'm even reading that rag):
“We would ask that you not broadcast this accomplishment out to any of your lists, even if they are ‘supporters’ — e-mails can too easily be forwarded.”
The e-mail continued: “Thus far, it seems that no press or blogs have discovered it, but we will be keeping a close watch and may be calling on you if we need a rapid, targeted response. The longer this goes unnoticed, the better our chances of keeping it.”
Any of you Democrats care to explain to me exactly how that fits into your vision of a fair and open democracy? Because I'm a bit confused.
Don't fall for it! To begin with Voyager was very preachy in many of its episodes, and the characters are rather one dimensional and even though they tried to Flesh them out and make care about them, I actually wanted them to fly into a sun or something. They also gave up the whole premise of limited resources pretty early which added an element that liked. The worse was Capt. (UGH!) Janeway. She had the most irritating voice of any person this side of Fran Drescher and Erkle. It made me want to shove an ice pick in my ear. Permanent deafness would have been better than to risk the chance of hearing her speak ever again.
So... that's a no?
