Taking Chance
HBO has recently premiered a film about military escort duty. It follows the story of Lt. Colonel Stroble as he escorts PFC Chance Phelps home after he was killed in Iraq. I know HBO is usually very liberal, but this story was written by Lt.Colonel Strobel and is a great story about the honor that is paid to the men and women who give the last full measure for our country.

Is this the documentary, which was based on a book, which was based on a series of articles in a Denver paper? I listened to an interview with the author and the officer a few months ago, and it was eye opening and heart wrenching.
I am not sure about the Denver articles. I do know that it is all based on the true story and he had initially been writing the transport report and felt that it was not enough and started writing more. No matter what, I felt that the telling transcended politics and just honored all our fallen. From how he said people seemed to know what he was doing even though he told no one. From the simple act of drivers turning on their headlights, to the fact that when the military prepared his body, they made sure his uniform was perfect even though it was a closed casket ceremony. Let me just say, it was rather dusty in the room for this old Marine.
Here's the link to the article, which did not feature Officer Strobl, from the Rocky Mountain News: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/special-reports/final-salute/
The pictures are absolutely gut-wrenching. I think this kind of view of the war completely transcends political viewpoint.
